Drip Coffee Machine

Standard automatic drip machines heat water to this temperature. Check your machine's manual.

Pour Over (V60, Chemex)

195-205°F

Slightly cooler than boiling helps prevent over-extraction with delicate pour over methods.

AeroPress

175-195°F

AeroPress relies on pressure, so cooler water still works great. Allows for more delicate flavors.

French Press

195-205°F

Immersion brewing works best with hot water. Standard kettle temperature works perfectly.

Espresso

200-210°F

Espresso machines maintain precise temperatures. Higher pressure requires hotter water.

Cold Brew

Room Temp (70°F)

Room temperature or refrigerated water. Brewing takes 12-24 hours. No heat needed!

Turkish Coffee

200-210°F

Very finely ground coffee brewed in hot water on a stovetop. Highest temperature for extraction.

Moka Pot

195-205°F

Stovetop brewer uses steam pressure. Water should be hot but not boiling.

💡 Temperature Tips

  • Boiling (212°F): Many recipes say "boiling water," but slightly cooler is better
  • 30 Seconds Rule: Boil water, wait 30 seconds = ~195°F (perfect for most methods)
  • Too Hot: Over 210°F can scald delicate coffee and cause bitterness
  • Too Cold: Under 160°F won't extract enough flavor (weak coffee)
  • Thermometer: A cheap kitchen thermometer ($10) helps dial in perfect temperature

⚠️ Common Temperature Mistakes

  • Using boiling water straight from kettle: It's too hot. Wait 30-60 seconds.
  • Brewing with cold or cool water: Coffee won't fully extract (weak, sour taste)
  • Ignoring bean type: Light roasts prefer slightly higher temps; dark roasts prefer slightly lower
